Hellooo.
I found you through the St. Mary's college thingy, and you don't seem very vicious, so would it be alright if I asked you some questions about the school? I really want to go there, and I wanted to get a student's perspective (Versus the school counselors, who would tell me only the good things about the school XD)

Go ahead. :) I'll tell you right now that it's really not much different from other schools except that they have a separate school were you can major in the great books (Aristotle, Plato, Euclid), and you have to take four semesters of "Seminar" which if you're like most students, you'll learn to loathe. :-P

Really though, SMC is a great school because it's so small so you really build close friendships with your classmates and professors. I can't think of another school that practically begs you to study abroad for at least a semester; almost everybody does it at some point.

Feel free to ask any more questions. I'll do my best to answer. :D

- What do you love about the school, and what do you hate about it?
- Would it be too much to ask what your GPA/SATs and Essay topic were? XD Mine are lower than the average accepted student, and I'm trying to find some inspiration for an awesome essay topic...
- How are the dorms? o.O

And, uh, any tips on getting in? xD

1/3. I love that it's close to home. I've saved my family and myself about $8,000 a year from not paying for room and board. Most of my friends have lived on campus, so I can't go into great detail about what they're like. Like any other college you'll have annoying room/suitemates, noisy neighbours, and strange smells at all hours of the day. I think freshman in this class and next year's have a very high likelyhood of living in triples, which according to my friend at Cal Berkeley, can be comfortable so long as you stay out of each other's hair. You might become friends with your roommates, or you might not even say hello. It's different with everyone.

That said, you want to beware of Oliver Hall, or as we all call it, Saga. It's the cafeteria and the food is by Sodexo (check out "Supersize Me" to learn all about em). I usually sneak in there to steal cereal or one of my friends with an unlimited meal plan lets me in. It's cafeteria food. It's caloric and greasy, but they make a mean grilled cheese and bowl of Cocoa Puffs.

What's also great is that the class sizes are rather small. Required classes average about 20 students, and depending on your major, you can have as few as four classmates in a single class. (In upper division Spanish I average about 15. In French 5 and they, plus my professors- all two of them- are great friends of mine.)

The one thing that bothers me is that unless you're very math/science oriented, you may struggle in fulfilling those area requirements. I took C++ as my math and ended up getting a D in it even though I'm good with computers. However, I'm decent at bio and I got a B+ in marine biology last year. Seminar, like I said, can be an annoying class depending on who teaches it. There's no "seminar professor" so you could get any lunatic; my first one taught astronomy, the other was head of the English department, and the third my advisor/head of the French department. It's a discussion class so you have to do the reading or your next meeting will make you wish you were back in bed and not wasting your time.

2. I can't really remember my highschool GPA/SAT scores, but I can tell you that it was no lower than 3.2, and my SATs were abysmal, especially math and that's with the "old" SAT. I think in the ballpark of 1100... ?

As for the essay, if you get a chance look for some college essay books at the library. They should be in 800 although you may find some in the 370s. Basically, if you write something and find yourself to be pompous or dull, scrap it. Ask your friends and family what comes to mind when they think of you. My mum remarked that I smiled all the time, even when I was really grumpy, and often called me facetious. My friends have always teased me about my height, and after being used for a game of "hot potato" one time too many, I wrote a tongue-in-cheek essay about being short in a tall world. I think I still have it if you want me to send it to you.

Basically, be yourself and don't brag. Don't write about how you love the scouts or playing your oboe or spending a summer building houses for poor people. The admissions people get those by the truckload and they want something fresh. Do you have an affinity for chickens? Did you ever read something that changed your life, or didn't even though it promised it would? Get abducted by aliens? Did all three happen one crazy day?

Oh, and I almost forgot to tell you about the best part of SMC: the Improv Club! If you like the TV series "Whose Line is it Anyway" at all, want to have clean fun on a Friday night, or even work on your improvisational/public speaking skills, the Improv Club can help. (No, that wasn't shameless self-promotion at all ^_^)

Thanks for the advice. *Crosses out my three current topic ideas* XD

Yay. Let's see...
My last question: Did you take an interview, and if you did, any suggestions or amusing stories to lessen my anxiety? xP

Hm... maybe they do now? I'd try to find out if you can. I don't think admissions has changed their guidelines, but if they did I can ask my friends at other schools how their interviews went. I don't imagine it's that much different from trying to get a job.

Good luck!

Hello, sorry to intrude into your journal.

I´m writing my thesis about social networking sites and advertising.
One of my objectives is to describe what kind of people use sites like LiveJournal.

I randomly chose you because you commented on this News post:

http://news.livejournal.com/107039.html

So, I was wondering if you could take this questionnaire:

http://www.sric-bi.com/VALS/presurvey.shtml

and tell me what was your result.

It´s a test called VALS, which stands for Values, Attitudes and Life Styles, that´s used to do psychographic segmentation.

If you decide to help me, I´ll be really grateful.
If I´ve bothered you, I´m really sorry, I won´t do it again.
