Hello,

This is really hard for me to write so I'm going to keep it short. Currently I'm living in Peterborough, Ontatio. I've been accepted to a semester long school in Moscow, from Feb 1st to May 30th. I cannot take my two ratties with me :,,,(. They've been with me for a year and a half, and ... it's gunna be really hard to be away from them. I'm wondering if anyone in Ontario (or near by) would be willing to rat sit them for a semester. I can provide their base food, bedding, and cage, up front if you like. Please, I want to see them go to a good home, I really don't want to leave these guys

the most beautiful time travel story: Days of Future Past [
11.07.09 at 9:11pm]

selinker
What: The "Days of Future Past" storyline from issues 141 and 142 of The Uncanny X-Men, from January-February 1981.

Why: I have extremely high standards for a time travel story. Internal logic matters more than anything. It can't involve Sandra Bullock watching a tree grow like mad or a prisoner seeing Ashton Kutcher spontaneously stigmatize or any encounter between the Fonz and a brontosaur. But X-Men writer Chris Claremont and artist John Byrne took temporal continuity seriously when they envisioned comics' scariest future. In 2013, North America is ground under the metal heels of the robot Sentinels, who have killed most of the superpowered beings and enslaved the humans. The rest of the world plans to nuke North America, which seven remaining superbeings—Sprite, her husband Colossus, Wolverine, Storm, Magneto, Franklin Richards, and Rachel, daughter of the deceased Cyclops and Jean Grey—hatch a desperate plan to deter. The psychic Rachel sends Sprite's mind back through time to stop the event that unleashed the Sentinels: the assassination of mutant-hating Senator Robert Kelly by the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants on October 31, 1980. Sprite awakens inside her youthful body, and leads the X-Men in battle against the Brotherhood on the floor of the U.S. Senate. Meanwhile, in the future, the surviving mutants attack the Sentinels in their Baxter Building headquarters. One by one... okay, there might be a clue of what happens on issue #142's cover. Is it enough to change the future? Only time will tell.

Impact: This riveting storyline jammed a stake in the earth and said, "Take comics seriously." At that time, it wasn't common for good guys to die in Marvel's comics. But just three issues earlier, Claremont and Byrne killed off Jean Grey in the most shocking comics death since Gwen Stacy. With "The Dark Phoenix Saga" and "Days of Future Past," the two laid a strong claim to the greatest writer-artist run on an ongoing mainstream comic. This run was commemorated some years later when the first X-Men film was based on "Days of Future Past" (minus the time travel), the third was based on "The Dark Phoenix Saga," and the second... well, that's a column for another day.

Personal Connection: "Days of Future Past" was the first X-Men comic I bought. Until then, I was solely a DC reader, amassing quite a collection of Batman titles. But the cover of X-Men #141 leapt off the rack at Golden Age Comics and told the 13-year-old me, "Kid, you're an X-Men fan." How could it not? Now widely acclaimed as the one of the greatest covers ever, the startling image of Wolverine and Kate Pryde spotlit in front of a superheroic body-count poster has been revised and parodied multiple times since. But you never forget your first genocide of mutantkind.

Other Contenders: that X-Men storyline's spiritual godchildren, the first and second films in the Terminator franchise; Slaughterhouse-Five, Kurt Vonnegut Jr's novel about a man who becomes unstuck in time, but doesn't mind much; "The City on the Edge of Forever" and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, showing the range of Star Trek's greatness; the spine-tingling Doctor Who episode "Blink", which will forever change your opinion about looking at statues of angels; Donnie Darko, a glimpse beyond the mirror; 12 Monkeys, a film which teaches us that science isn't an exact science; Peabody's Improbable History, the historic adventures of a dog and his boy.

Adopting a rattie! [
11.07.09 at 4:57pm]

ratties

[concertina9]
Hello!
I currently have one lovely rattie named carl and I just bought a gigantic super pet 4 level cage for him! But I'm feeling like oh my I think he needs a friend to hang out with in this huge cage! So I plan to find him a cage mate after I come back from thanksgiving vacation.

Carl is a young male non-neutered rattie, what do I need to know before venturing out to find him a buddy?
What do I really need to know! (possible links?!) and does anyone know someone in the Portland Oregon area who would be ideal to adopt from (either a breeder or a shelter)

Thanks!

dealing with tumors [

[pink_parakeets]
I'm not sure if anyone remembers me posting a couple months ago about getting a fairly large tumor removed from my 1.5 year old rat Olivia.

After spending $400 on this removal I noticed about a month later another tumor growing. At this time I was just about to make a big move, get married, and leave my job because my husband is military. I didn't want to put her through another surgery before making the 14hr move with no back up recovery cage and no vet in TN. So we decided to wait until we were settled.

After moving and finding a vet the tumor had grown very large..about the size of a large egg. I took her in for a consultation to get it removed and we noticed a small bump on her thigh. The vet said this would bump the surgery up to over $500. Without a job and bills to pay I was crushed by this news. Plus being new to the area I wasn't very happy with this vet and wanted a second opinion.

After taking hookah to be euthanized the lady at the clinic gave us a list of vets with one she highly recommended. She also gave us a link to carecredit.com

We are planing on getting a second opinion but a part of me is scared to put her through another sugery with such a large tumor, another part of me feels so bad for her and guilty that I couldn't do something sooner.

She is very healthy besides the growths. She eats, drinks, boggles, and grooms herself. But her happiness is my biggest concern. I don't want t put her through something when I know only more tumors will come up.

I'd loe to hear some of your stories dealing with large tumors. How did you deal financially? Did you ever decide to leave them? Have you ever euthanized a rattie with a large tumor?

Thank you.

P.s. Thanks again for your nice comments about Hookahs passing.

crack rat [

ok, Po is nuts. she is on rat crack or something. She tries to jump from my hands all the time even if i have her at chest height. I've caught her every time, but it really makes it frustrating to handle her.

To give her some exercise, since she won't let me play with her, i fenced off the kitchen with wood planks that are too high to jump over, and just let her run loose. SHE SCALED THE FRIDGE. I am watching her right now, sitting on top of the fridge. What the hell.

I've never had a rat this insane. Is it a girl thing? How can I deal with it? -_-

I just wanted to update you all on Hookah. When we took her out to feed her (i had cooked some pasta and scrambled eggs) we noticed that she hadn't seemed to leave her igloo all day. Her legs were very stiff and straight out (not bent like usual) At first i actually thought she had left us.

After taking her out and letting her eat some yogurt we noticed she wasn't able to move most of her body and i felt like she had lost even MORE weight since last night. I felt terrible and didn't want to see her suffering. We rushed her over to the emergency clinic about an hour away and were pleased to find out that the woman assisting us was also a previous rat owner and showed so much love to hookah.

They put a drug in some a/d food to help knock her out. She gobbled it up even though moments before she seems almost out of life. I was happy to see that her final moments were filled with people petting her and getting to eat a real treat.

We stayed as they performed the heart stick. I have to say this was the most peaceful euthanasia i have ever witnessed with any of my girls. I truly feel that she was able to pass without pain or suffering.

I want to thank you all again for all of the support.

Long story short, dryer machine went schizo and caught fire...or just smoldered into smoke last night. We share a basement with our neighbors, and they put some clothes in the dryer, and they kept drying until it burned. Happened around midnight, had to call the firefighters. They showed up, everyone was safe, and only the dryer was burnt. Emma let us sleep at her place, while we let the apartment clear out the smoke. Pretty uneventful, but stressing none the less. We're lucky we weren't a sleep. Felt bad for the land lords, they live upstairs where the smoke was the worse, and they have small children. But we're all back in the triplex today! Woo!

Performance tomorrow, Voodoo dance show thing. Doors open at 7PM, at the Empress theatre. I'll only be doing one number, but it's Sexyback, so it's fucking rad. Be there?

Short cute story,

I was giving the rats their dinner late last night, later than usual because my stupid sewing machine broke. I just gave the girls/neutered boys straight lab blocks and then -tried- to give the boys the same. But Leo took one look at the blocks and then frantically rushed the FN doors like he was still expecting food.

For the past few days I've been giving them a bit of high quality wet dog food with a few high quality kibbles and chopped veggies in it. Since my dad was going to be up soon I just offered him some kibbles which I keep downstairs, but Leo just picked one up and dropped it.

So I gave up and went and got some of the canned stuff, mixed a little hot water in and offered him that. That sure did the trick, he just smooshed his face right in there! I've never seen a boy rat eat faster! :P

Just goes to show their memory skills a bit. ;)

Going downhill [

[ music | Trinity Blood OST - Requiem ~ Inori ]

It seems poor Nimoy, Shaq's brother, is heading a downward slope now. What we originally though was arthritis in his hind legs (which we got Metacam for) has turned into hindleg paralysis, I'm sure. He has an appointment on Monday morning to get it checked out. It seemed like the Metacam was working at first, as he could move around a bit easier a few hours after he'd had his dose. But now it no longer seems to be working.
He doesn't seem to affected by it, though. He still eats and drinks happily, is eager to try and climb up the sides of his cage for me to take him out for cuddles (sadly ending with him slumping back onto his hammock unsuccessful) and jerks up when he hears the yogie container shaking.
What can I do to make it easier for the poor little geriatric? I've lowered his hammock so that it's easier for him to get to food, and added small wooden Crawl-aways for him to hoist himself back up, which he seems to have no problems with. Couchtime on a soft blanky just looks so painful to see, but yet he doesn't seem to be in any pain. Would it be better to end it before he gets to the point of not eating anymore? I'm just really worried he's going to give in to survival and chew his legs off. 8(

sorry to post again but this morning while i was giving Hookah her medicine I tried to take a better look in her mouth.

My husband had originally thought her front teeth were mis-aligned but with a second look it almost seems like one of her front bottom teeth is missing?? I don't know if broke off or what! I drew a silly picture in paint to explain the situation better.

Twin Berks; one euth'd, the other: depressed? [
11.06.09 at 10:12am]

ratties

[fourthwand]
I adopted a set of Berkshires from a friend of mine in Wisconsin 2 years ago. They were always fairly active. Recently, I had to put Chewy down. Her benign mam. tumor had finally started to cause discomfort and distension. I stayed with her while she was put to sleep, and then watched as she was euth'd. It was quite peaceful, and I'd been working up to it for the 2 months since her tumor developed. But now she has crossed the Bridge, and I will wait 'til the ground thaws to bury her.

However: Her sister, the incredibly affectionate and friendly Spot (who is everyone's favorite), is now completely withdrawn. I take her out for the usual walks around the house, dishes, and computer time for cuddling-- all she does is hide in my hood or pocket and eat. She doesn't nibble on me, or try to clean me, or run under my fingers for petting. I can't just pick up a replacement for Chewy, but I don't want Spot to be lonely. I also feel bad waking her or pulling her out of a cube or hammie just to give her more attention.

Not the first time I've lost a rat before, but this is the first time I've dealt with a sad sibling. Suggestions?
